Project Background
This project is a visual narrative created for the "Ri Xing Song No.2" typeface, aiming to present how this classic movable type evolves across eras—from the analog age of metal type casting to the digital future—serving as a timeless cultural bridge. Through cinematic storytelling, we highlight not just the craftsmanship of traditional printing, but the deeper meaning of the word “Chuan” (to transmit), embodying both communication and cultural inheritance.

Creative Approach
To reinterpret the transition from tradition to digital, we adopted a point cloud technique as our visual metaphor. Historically, the modular nature of metal type has been illustrated through Tetris-like forms. In our film, these solid forms dissolve into particles—symbolizing their digitization—and then reassemble into a cyberpunk vision of a futuristic Taiwan. This aesthetic transformation reflects not only a shift in media, but a continued reverence for heritage, projected into the world of tomorrow.

A Typographic Vision of a Future Taipei
This image reimagines Dihua Street as a data-driven cyberpunk cityscape, with Ri Xing Song No.2 typeface featured across a variety of iconic Taiwanese neon signs. By deconstructing the physical environment into point clouds, we visualize the transition from analog to digital—showing how typography, once cast in metal, continues to live and evolve in a futuristic cultural context.

Motion Design
Our motion design emphasizes a continuous state of deconstruction and digitization. Every element—whether it's metal type, street architecture, or floating signage—is animated as if in mid-transition, dissolving into particles, point clouds, or signal-like interference. This constant rhythm of disassembly and reformation reinforces the core narrative: the blurred boundary between analog heritage and digital future, and how the act of “transmitting” evolves through time.

Technical Execution
We utilized TouchDesigner to create generative lines, point clouds, and particle effects that evoke the transformation of text into digital data. These elements emphasize the shift from analog typesetting to real-time information flow. Additionally, we conducted 3D scans on location in Dihua Street, converting its architectural forms into point cloud data. This hybrid approach—combining procedural visuals with site-specific scans—allows us to blur the line between reality and a speculative digital future.
